The rich flora and fauna, the migrants and stapled species of Loktak Lake has been decreasing at an alarming rate due to many human acts, said Dr S Singshit, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest today during the opening function of the Five-day Capacity Strengthening Program on Monitoring of Water Birds and Wild Life Management.
Department of Forest, Wild Life Wing, Government of Manipur and Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai jointly organized the five days program under the aegis of Loktak Development Authority at FDA Hall, Central Forest Division, Mantripukhri.
Speaking in the function, Dr Singshit said that condition of the Keibul Lamjao National Park which area is 40 sq km has been degenerating largely since the past 30 years.
Many migratory birds which used to visit the park are decreasing every year.
He said that the present condition of the Loktak lake is due to the unthoughtful act of man.
He speculated the urgent need of developing and protecting the natural status of the lake.
Cooperation of the people residing along the lake is needed very much in order to develop the lake, he asserted.
He also said that the LDA has prepared a short term action plan for conserving and maintaining the natural balance of the Loktak lake.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Wild Life Wing and also Wild Life Warden, A Kharsing presided over the function.
Assistant Director, Bombay Natural History Society, Dr S Balachandran also attended the function as guest of honour.
Dr S Balachandran gave speeches on Bird Identification (Forest Birds), Bird Identification (Water Birds), Bird counting technique and Importance of bird counting for the wild life bird management, Conservation category of wild birds and their conservation needs to the trainees.
In the evening session, resource persons and trainees discussed on Important Wetlands and Ramsar sites of India, Prioritization of Wetlands and National Parks and Wild Life catching techniques.
The team will visit Keibul Lamjao National Park tomorrow.
