Employers urged to pay festival bonus

Imphal, October 15 2021:
All Manipur Shops & Establishment Employees' Association has appealed to the employers of shops and establishments to pay annual bonus to their employees before the coming Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals.
Justifying its appeal for payment of the bonus in a press release, the association cited, "Under the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 or the Wages Code, 2019 every employer in the private sector employing 10 or more employees in his shops and establishments including factories, bank, financial institution, insurance company, private hospital/clinic/nursing home, private educational in stitution, brick field, printing press, newspaper establishment, motor transport undertaking, telephone service undertaking, etc, on any day in any accounting year is liable to make payment of annual bonus to the employees within the period of eight months from the end of the accounting year".
It then said, "Usually the employers of the shops and establishments in the private sector used to make the payment of the annual bonus to their respective employees the month in which the said festival fell.
The payment of the annual bonus for the accounting year, 2021-21 is to be made on or before the end of December, 2021.Both the Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals fall in November 2021".The association then appealed to all the employers concerned to make payment of the annual bonus not less than one month's wages for the accounting year, 2020-21 prior to the Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals in the interest of the poor employees affected by the COVID-19 lockdown.
