AMSU organises essay competition

In connection with observance of Realisation Day, which falls on April 17, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) organised a state level essay competition on the topic 'Importance of Inner Line Permit system in Manipur, migrants and their impact' and under the theme 'Respect indigenous People's Rights, End New Colonialism' at Dhanamanjuri University, DM College of Arts PG Block on Sunday.
In a release, AMSU secretary general Bikramjit Thongam informed that 62 students took part in the competition and the winners will be declared on April 15 and prizes will be distributed on April 17 at Manipur College Multipurpose Hall.
Hitherto, the history of world has witnessed overpowering of smaller communities or groups by larger ones.
There were several independent countries that have lost their future as they were colonised by other powerful nations.
It is inevitable that every endangering community raised their voices and initiate movement for protecting themselves, Bikramjit maintained.
He recalled that after Manipur was annexed to the Indian Union in 1949, chief commissioner Himat Singh removed the restrictions against influx of outsiders into Manipur in 1950 without discussing the matter with the people.
Subsequently, outsiders started settling in every nook and corner of the state and have even controlled the economy.
In 1980, AMSU along with the people rose up against the outsiders and launched 'Go back Foreigners' movement.
During the movement, Potshangbam Lukhoi alias Premananda and Huidrom Loken attained martyrdom and many suffered injuries in police action.
As such, April 17 is being observed as Realisation Day every year as a mark of respect to the martyred students and to strengthen stand for the protection of the land, Bikramjit stated.
