Tura Lions Club earns accolade for its Samaritan works

The Tura Lions Club, which has been in the forefront of Samaritan works within the region received more plaudits for the work it has been doing.
In a glittering ceremony held in Kiranshree Hotel in Guwahati, Tura Lions Club received praise for its efforts aimed at helping the poorer sections of society as well as the efforts in setting up the eye hospital to cater to the need for eye care within the Garo Hills region.
The function was held yesterday.
"We are happy that our efforts are being recognized by the North East chapter of the Lions Club.
As a community we need more efforts to bring about change in Garo Hills and we hope things can be better with the effort we all put in", said the Tura chapter president, Kamal Agarwal, who was also awarded the best president for the North East chapter.
The club, which is a couples only, now has 76 members in the Tura chapter.
It was also awarded for being the fastest growing and the highest fund raising club within the 322 D district region.
Abhijit Das, who won the 2nd best regional chairperson, was upbeat about the activities of the club.
He said, "We are due to lay the foundation stone for the new Eye Hospital in Tura, in Dakopgre.
The foundation stone laying should be done this month itself and we hope the benefits of the hospital will reach the whole Garo Hills region" .
The NGO has undertaken quite a few initiatives to try and provide benefits to the people of the region, including waiting sheds, public toilets, distribution of food and medicines, distribution of shawls etc.
The latest plaudits received, which included the best club president, the highest fund collection, fastest growing among others, is another shot in the arm for the young team of Samaritans.
