Imphal, October 15 2014:
Centre for Tribal and Endangered Languages Promotion Board (CTELPB) has questioned the Higher Education Department of Union Ministry of Human Resource Development how National Science Foundation could award $ 300,000 to Prof Scot DeLancey of University of Oregon (UO), Australia for audio and video documentation of Monsang language as documentation of the language is currently underway under Central Institite of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club yesterday, CTELPB Convenor Dr Th Chandramani said that CTELPB is a body, run under the patronage of Tribal Research Institute, Government of Manipur and Linguistics Department of Manipur University.
He added that CTELPB has also already documented Monsang language.
Saying that it was mentioned in the NSF press release that Prof Scot DeLancy would conduct his research with support from Chandel Endangered Languages Committee and Manipur University, Dr Chandramani said that there is no body in Chandel district under the name, 'Chandel Endangered Languages Committee' and Manipur University has no knowledge about NSF's award to Prof DeLancey.
Maintaining that Dr Chandramani himself is the former chief resource person/senior resource person of CTEL and Dimensions of Language Endangerment Programme of CIIL, Mysore, he said that endangered languages survey had already been extensively conducted in 2009-10 under his help and guidance.
