Imphal, August 29 2022:
Members of All Manipur Bar Association staged a sit-in protest in front of Cheirap Court complex, Uripok here on Monday, condemning the felling of a 50-year-old Bottle Brush tree (Barap Lei) growing inside the complex by unknown people.
Speaking on the sidelines, Association's general secretary Maisnam Johnny informed that the 50-year-old tree was found cut down by on August 28, which happened to be a holiday.
The tree was not only a part of the court's history but also provided shade and a place of respite.
He then urged authority concerned to investigate under whose authority and order the tree had been cut down.
Informing that an emergency meeting of the Association was convened on Monday following the incident, Johnny said that various resolutions were adopted, one of which included staging of the sit-in protest.
It is condemnable for trees to be felled like this indiscriminately when both the central and state governments are campaigning for conservation of the environment, he remarked, while adding that a written request has been made to the Manipur High Court Chief Justice to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, a circular has been issued by Manipur High Court registrar general Golmei Gaiphulshului to judicial officers and establishment heads under the Court, stating that no trees inside court campuses can be felled without the permission of the Court.
