PUD stages sit-in with various demands

People who Use Drug (PUD) on Saturday staged a sit-in protest at the community hall of Keishampat Leimajam Leikai here.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest demonstration organised by Association of Drug Users Manipur (ADUM, it president L Gopicharan observed that there has been increasing incidents of PUDs subjected to violence, or found dead under mysterious circumstances at drug treatment centres over the years.
As such, the sit-in protest was organised in condemnation of such incidents and also to urge the government to take strict note of the matter, he added.
He continued that PUDs are also human beings and are entitled to basic human rights including access to ethical medical treatment.
Thus, Gopicharan demanded implementation of the Manipur State Policy on Psychoactive Substances, 2019 at the earliest and also regulation of all drug treatment centres under a specific guideline.
He also urged for investigating the incidents and award befitting punishments to those found guilty, so as to prevent repeat of such incidents in the future.
He further informed that a memorandum containing the said demands will be submitted to the Chief Minister.
