Imphal, May 14 2021:
Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) strongly condemned the gang rape of a Manipuri widow inside NIT Campus in Modhutilla on May 9 and urged the government of Assam to award stringent punishment to those involved in the crime.
The incident occurred when the woman was returning home after her work from a nursing home.
While crossing Kendriya Vidyalaya school on her way home, she was offered a lift by a biker identified as Kanhai Lal Goal, who insisted that he was a resident of nearby Basti after which the woman agreed and rode on his motorcycle.
Then she was raped by him along with his two accomplices, YFPHR said in a press release.
After returning home, the gang-rape survivor along with her family members immediately rushed to Gunghoor police station.
As instructed by the officer-in-charge of the police station, she was taken by women police constables to Silchar Medical College & Hospital where she was found positive for Covid-19 and was denied medical examination.
Delay in medical examination will lead to loss of vital evidences which showed negligence on the part of the police and the medical institution, the Forum said.
YFPHR then said that it could observe negligence by the police station concerned in handling the case as per the rule of law and urged the Assam government to conduct the medical examination immediately and to direct the social welfare department to provide psychological support and compensation to the victim as soon as possible.
It further asked the government of Assam to award stringent punishment to all those involved in the inhumane act during this deadly coronavirus pandemic and also to take necessary action against the police station concerned for not conducting medical examination.
YFPHR, meanwhile, said that it had already written to the SP and DC of Cachar district regarding the ghastly incident and will also write to the DGP and CM of Assam for speedy investigation.
