Imphal, December 06 2013 :
While endorsing the proposed bandh to be called by Cachar Road Educational and Sporting Association (CRESA) with effect from December 6, Zeliangrong Students' Union, Khoupum Area (ZSUKA) and Driver Association, Khoupum Area (DAKA) have expressed discontentment over the pitiable condition of the historical Imphal-Cachar road popularly known as the Old Cachar Road or Tongjei Maril.
In a joint statement, the two bodies pointed out that the road stretch has been lying in a pitiable condition with large potholes, puddles, mud, slush and worn out culverts from zero point till Rengpang.
Noting that only lifeline of the villagers settling along the both sides of the historic road is set to be repaired at an estimated cost of Rs 141 crores under North Eastern Council (NEC), the joint statement said that this news has certainly brought some respite to weary people who have been deprived and suffered excessively due to the bad road and transportation for years.
However, this could be possible only when the repairing work is taken up by an independent agency and not by money-monger contractors.
ZSUKA and DAKA have called upon the State Government to look into the matter and repair the road with blacktopping in the interest of the people at the earliest.
