Imphal, September 09 2014:
Echoing the ill effects of the ongoing blockade on the highways, the Meitei Students' Union (MSU) in a press statement issued today appealed for lifting the highway blockade within 24 hours.
In a press statement, the Union warned that it will be compelled to go for an all-out protest, unless the blockade is lifted.
'We also appeal to the state and the central government to take up necessary actions to prevent such inhuman activities', the statement said.
Prices of essential items soar sky-high as the economic blockade commences for the fourth day in Manipur, while people living hand-to-mouth are the worst affected, it asserted and alleged that trucks carrying daily essential commodities are left stranded in the state border, and drivers and handymen assaulted.
Petrol pumps have started rationing on a daily basis, as the blockade has a huge impact on the economy of the state.
In 2006-07, the 77-day economic blockade had caused losses with an estimated value of Rs.3.01 crores on a daily basis, the Union stated, while adding that 'although the purported agenda is to teach the state government a lesson, the laymen are the only ones who are shedding the silent tear' .
