Arrested JCILPS members remanded to judicial custody

Imphal, September 09 2014:
All the 12 members of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) who were arrested on charges of extortion and assault following the alleged assault on Yengkhom Devson, proprietor of M/S Tashi Interior, Singjamei after he was called in the office of the committee on September 8 were produced today before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East which later on remanded them to judicial custody for 15 days.
Notably, they were supposed to be produced at Cheirap Court but the idea was cancelled and made them appeared before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East citing security reasons.
The 12 JCILPS members have been identified as Moirangthem Angamba Singh (34), Johnson Nongmaithem (29), Sumanta Monoharmayum (23), Elangbam Bijendra Meitei (22), Longjam Abothe Meitei (24), Konsam Phulindro Singh (54), Md Sajad Buya (19), Sarangthem William Milton (25), Khumukcham (n) Naosekpam (o) Rashesori Devi (55), Okram (n) Khomdram (o) Gunabati Devi, Hijam Ibema Devi (42) and Nameirakpam Ibemcha Devi (55) .
The reason for the arrest was made known to them only in the court.
But they denied the charges leveled against them u/s 368/326/384/34 IPC.
Porompat Police Station had registered a suo-motto case on the basis on alleged report that some Manipuris and non-Manipuris were detained by the members of the committee including members of its women's wing and assaulted them by using deadly weapons and also extorted huge amount of money from them.
After coming out from the court, M Angamba, who is the convener of JCILPS Students' Wing, told reporters that the committee treated both the indigenous people and non-locals equally on the issue on ILP.
However, it will give a befitting reply to those who tried to suppress the ongoing movement for implementation of ILP in the State.
He condemned the arrest of several people in connection with the ILP demand and subsequent remand to judicial custody by framing unrelated charges.
Meanwhile, demanding suspension of Y Victoria, Addl SP (Traffic) who raided the JCILPS's office and implementation of ILP system in the State at the earliest, a large number of women vendors of Khwairamband Market and students tried to storm the Governor's House.
However, they were dispersed by security personnel at Kangla Pat by firing mock bombs during which four students were injured.
They were admitted to RIMS Hospital for treatment.
