A new food processing unit was opened today at KVK Hengbung by ICAR Deputy Director General (Agriculture and Extension) Dr AK Singh.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Dr AK Singh said that KVK is a key instrument of the Government of India.
KVKs have been imparting education and knowledge to farmers in different fields related to agriculture and allied activities, and they are supported by different organisations like ICAR.
All the KVKs spread across the country are centres of knowledge and research.
He announced that integrated farming system would be launched through 100 KVKs.
Saying that the country ' s pulses productivity is 4 million MT short of the actual requirement, Dr AK Singh said that due procedure has been initiated to convert 100 KVKs into seed hubs so as to make up the deficit in pulses production.
50 other KVKs would be converted into seed hubs in the second phase.
Out of the 100 KVKs selected for the first phase, the North East region has eight KVKs including one in Manipur.
Under the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, due process has been started to undertake demonstration farming of pulses over 77,000 acres.
In the meantime, 100 selected KVKs would be given training on skill development.
Farmers and drop-out youth who have received skill development training through KVKs would be given loans so that they can take up different income generating activities, Dr AK Singh added.
CAU Imphal Vice Chancellor Prof M Premjit and ATARI Zone III, ICAR Barapani Director Dr Bidyut Deka were also present at the inaugural function.
