Imphal, November 24 2013:
Father of an infant boy accusing JNIMS Hospital medical personnel of lacking professional commitment has demanded that suitable action be initiated against the erring doctor and nursing staff of the State run hospital.
Speaking to newspersons at Manipur Press Club today Abel Ningshen of Nambashi Khullen under Kasom Khullen sub-division in Ukhrul district said his third child was administered Hepatitis (Hep-B1) vaccination on November 12, 2013 at JNIMS Hospital, where the baby boy was also born the previous month (October 10) .
Two days after the Hep-B1 vaccination the baby's left leg reportedly started to swell and was inconsolable prompting the parents to report the child's entire condition to JNIMS Hospital doctors on November 16 .
Even as the doctor on duty prescribed Paracetamol without any assessment of the swelling the parents were accused of not confessing that the child was brought to the hospital after administration of some other injection to which the parents furnished documents about the child's date of delivery and the last vaccination report at JNIMS Hospital, Abel recounted.
Stating that the infant child is currently undergoing treatment at privately-run Mothers' Care Children Hospital and Research Centre, Sagolband Moirang Leirak Machin for there was no sign of recovery even after administering the JNIMS doctor-prescribed Paracetamol, Abel quoted a doctor of the private medical centre as saying that the swelling in the child's leg might be due to bare-hand contact with the injecting area at the time of Hep B1 administration.
Not ruling out possibility of nerve infection causing swelling of the boy's leg the doctor also explained that internal bleeding normally swells the affected portion, Abel recalled.
Conveying that on a daily basis the average spending for the boy's treatment is about Rs 900, he demanded that JNIMS authorities pull up the erring doctor/nurse of the hospital as well as compensate the Ningshen family said to be agricultural worker.
Abel also opined that incompassionate attitude of the JNIMS doctors amounts to racial discrimination.
North East Border Area Development Organisation (Nebado) president Paisho Keishing, who was also present at the media briefing strongly condemned alleged negligence and professional incompetency of JNIMS Hospital personnel.
Demanding that hospital authorities initiate appropriate action against the erring doctors/nurses on duty at the time of Hep-B1 vaccination, he also maintained that JNIMS ought to reimburse the entire expenditure incurred in the diagnosis and treatment of the baby boy.
Contrary to Abel's daily expenditure estimate, Paisho said the Ningshen family has been spending about Rs 2500 every day.
