Imphal, November 24 2013:
The proscribed PREPAK has expressed deep concern over the raising rate of violence against women.
Endorsing the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25), the outfit asserted that violence against women not only denies social justice but also poses a regressive threat to the human civilization.
A statement issued by the outfit's assistant secretary, publicity and propaganda LeibakNgakpa Luwang traced the genesis of the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women to the killing of three sistersMinerva, Mirabel and Maria Teresa on November 25, 1960 under a conspiracy in a car accident which paved the way for the downfall of Rafael Trujillo's fascist regime in the Dominican Republic.
Apart from enacting the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, India is a signatory to the UN's Convention on all forms of discrimination against women.
However, the Government of India has not implemented the principles and agreements of the convention in the patriarchal Indian society.
On account of this failure on the part of the Government of India, violence against women has been rising at an alarming rate in the country.
According to the National Crime Record Bureau, 8233 women were killed in dowry related violence in Indian in 2012.On the average, 8000 women were killed in a year in the past 5/6 years in India.
Whereas democracy in India has failed to bring any positive change in the social structure, India has transformed itself into a totalitarian society, the outfit alleged.
Annual crime rate against women in India is 15,5,553 in 2005, 964765 in 2006, 185312 in 2007, 195856 in 2008, 203804 in 2009 and 213585 in 2010.These figures indicate how vulnerable women are in India.
Such culture of ill-treating and discriminating women generally identified with India has been continuously bombarding the indigenous society since Kangleipak was 'annexed' into the Indian Union.
Between 2005 and October 2013, more than 1200 cases of violence against women were recorded in Manipur.
Underscoring the urgent need to check this abominable trend, the outfit asserted that violence against women can be controlled only when women are empowered enough, politically and economically, it asserted.
