Statue unveiled

In commemoration of the 126th death anniversary of General Balaram Sougaijam, members of General Balaram Sougaijam Foundation unveiled the statue of the late general today at Sougaijam Lampak, Moirang-khom.
The ceremony was attended by former Chief Minister RK Dorendro, MLA Elangbam Chand Singh, Padmashree RK Jhaljit Singh and former Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Chongtham Jamini Devi.
The statue was erected by the General Balaram Sougai-jam Foundation at the cost of Rs 3 crore.
General Balaram Sougai-jam was among the extraordinary three to have received the "general" title in the history of Manipur�the other two being Longjamba Roma and Thangal.

Former CM RK Dorendro Singh, during his speech, emphasised on the need to give due recognition to Gen Balaram Sougaijam both by the State and the public.
RK Jhaljit, in his speech mentioned the contributions made by the late General in the establishment of educational institutions in the State.
The late General, who was also one of the most trusted ministers in the court of Maharaj Chandrakriti, is believed to have played a vital role in the establishment of Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Jhaljit stated.
