Family accuses doctor of negligence

Imphal, April 04 2010:
A young housewife of 23 years, identified as Maibam Ningol Keisham Ongbi Soni Devi, wife of K Sunderjit @ Amarjit of Wabagai Thingel Leikai under Kakching PS in Thoubal district, has died during delivery at Langol View Charitable Clinic at Lamphel last night.
A Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Criminal Attitude of Dr Irom Chourajit has been formed by the family, relatives and local residents of Wabagai Thingel Leikai today.
K Surendrajit is the convenor.
The JAC has submitted a memorandum containing three resolutions to Health Minister Ph Parijat.
The JAC demanded institution of a Magisterial Inquiry into the death of K Soni Devi, termination of Dr I Chourajit from service and cancellation of his registration number from the Medical Council of India (MCI) .
If the government does not translate the three demands into action within two days, the JAC warned of an intensive form agitation, and also said that the lifeless body Soni would not be taken back.
This was announced at a press conference held tonight at the quarter of MLA Usham Deben at Babupara.
Surendrajit informed reporters that Soni has been consulting Dr I Chourajit on her pregnancy.
She was admitted to JNIMS hospital around 8 am yesterday.
Dr Chourajit gave her one or two injections and gave the expected delivery time as 3 pm.
The convenor of the JAC further informed that the young housewife began to feel pain in the afternoon.
The family phoned Dr Chourajit at about 1 pm.
The doctor told them to bring the patient to Langol View Charitable Clinic.
The patient was taken to the private clinic from JNIMS at about 2 pm.
The doctor examined Soni, and said that it was normal, and gave her some more injections.
The patient complained of acute pains between 4 pm and 5 pm.
She said, she was unable to bear the suffering.
The family members searched for Dr Chourajit at the clinic from 7 pm to 9.30 pm, but he was not found.
When they asked the nurses, they said Dr Chourajit had gone to attend an Ipan Thaba ceremony.
All that while, the patient was suffering from acute pains, the convenor said.
Dr Chourajit was seen driving in to the clinic around 10 pm last night.
The patient was taken inside the delivery room.
All the family members and relatives were kept outside the gate of the clinic.
They were told around 12 midnight that some bottles of blood were required.
The patient party acquired five bottles of blood and gave the nurses.
But they came to know that Soni along with the baby were dead at about 1.30 am.
Sunderjit @ Amarjit, husband of Soni was too shocked, and is still hospitalised at the psychiatric ward in RIMS hospital, the convenor said.
A large number of local residents of Wabagai Thingel Leikai came in some vehicles to the private clinic in the early morning today, and stayed in front of the gate of the clinic wailing and condemning the alleged negligence of the doctor.
A team of Lamphel Police Station came to the clinic to control the protesters.
Meanwhile, the family has lodged a complaint with the Imphal Police Station.
On the other hand, SSP Imphal West, L Kailun has also submitted a report to the Director of Health Services.
The Director, Health Services has formed a team of three doctors to make a preliminary inquiry into the whole incident.
The team went to JNIMS hospital and also to Langol View Charitable Clinic to make assessment if the doctor concerned had made any professional negligence and error.
