Kakching, April 04 2010:
Angry locals lynched a man who hacked his wife to death using an axe in a bizarre incident that occurred at a village in Thoubal district today.
The dead couple is survived by three children including an only 40day-old baby.
Reports received from the spot said that one Okram Biren (35) of Langathel Mamang Leikai under Kakching Police Station hacked to death his 26 year-old wife, Babita with an axe while she was in their bedroom this morning at about 7.30 am.
On realising that Biren had brutally killed his wife, the enraged residents of the neighbourhood caught the murderer after sometime and lynched him in the courtyard of his house.
The local residents used all kinds of weapons like daos, sticks, stones, etc.
they could lay their hands on in attacking the murderer husband.
The couple got married around eight years back.
They have three children, the youngest one being only around 40 days old.
The eldest son is about seven year-old while the second one is only five year-old.
The eldest son, Ango told the neighbours that while his mother was re-arranging the bed in the morning, his father entered inside the bedroom holding an axe and struck his mother near her head.
At that time he was playing in the front verandah of the house.
He showed the neighbours how his mother fell down on the ground after his father hacked her, and later his father closed the door.
On seeing the scene, he ran to the neighbourhood and informed what had happened to his house.
Despite the information, the neighbours did not pay much attention as quarrel between the couple was not new.
Local reports, in the meantime, said that after the boy told the neighbours about the incident, some of them went to the house to see but the house was found locked from inside.
They broke the locked door and caught Biren.
He was dragged outside the house into the courtyard and was attacked with deadly weapons like sticks, stones and daos.
Babita was a resident of the same locality with Biren who was married with another woman named Pukhrambam Ibemcha.
But Biren and Ibemcha got divorced after having three children, all daughters, when Biren once tried to kill Ibemcha by strangulating her.
Kakching police station registered a case and seized a bloodstained axe, a dao with some stones and sticks from the house of the two victims, a police report here said adding that no arrest has been made so far with regard to the incident.
The dead bodies of the husband and the wife have been transferred to the recently opened morgue at JN Hospital for necessary official procedures.
