Bandh total along Imphal-Ukhrul road

Imphal, June 26 2013:
Traffic along Imphal-Ukhrul road was brought to a grinding halt due to the 24-hour statewide bandh called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) that has been pushing for safe release of Irungbam Irabanta whose whereabouts has not been known after allegedly abducted by NSCN-IM last year.
The bandh could not affect normal life in the state, barring Lamlai area, Napetpalli and Yorbung along Imphal-Ukhrul road in Imphal East district on Wednesday.
Bandh supporters in Yorbung area were dispersed by police by firing several rounds of tear gas canisters around 10 am after they tried to stop movement of people in the area.
However, no one was injured in the incident.
Normal traffic on the Imphal-Ukhrul route was halted due to the strike that began 5 am.
However, a few educational institutions in Imphal were remained close although almost all the Government establishments could be seen as normal.
No untoward incident was reported during the course of the bandh that will end at 5 am tomorrow.
Irabanta, a sand supplier for Maphou Dam construction, was allegedly kidnapped by the NSCN-IM on May 27, 2012 .
Since then his whereabouts is unknown till today.
He is a resident of Nongdam Maning Leikai in Imphal East.
