Felling trees inside temple premises

Imphal, April 25 2011:
Police has started investigation into a controversy that erupted among the villagers of Kekru from the cutting down of trees in the premises of Mahadeva Temple Guwarok hill under Yairipok PS of Thoubal district.
Police initiated the investigation following a directive of the Thoubal CJM when some villagers filed a case against the cutting of trees inside the temple premises.
It is alleged that the cutting down of trees was led by one Mutum Chaoba (52) as per the complaint lodged to court.
Chaoba led about 40 people to fell the trees.
When villagers led by Longjam Narahari objected, they were chased with deadly weapons like spears, Thangpak (dao), axes, etc.
Trees worth over ' 3 lakh were felled and the petitioned prayed for the court's intervention to punish the culprits.
On April 21 the court pronounced directed the police to investigate into the matter and furnish a report.
