Imphal, July 08 2014:
Police have pulled up 61 members of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (CAF & PD) Labors' Welfare Association who have been demanding, among others, release of their due salaries and increase of wages while they were staging sit-in-protest in front of FCI godown at Sangaiprou here today.
The sit-in-protest was staged as part of their cease work strike which has been ongoing on since July 6 .
Speaking to media persons, one of the laborers, said that they have been getting lower wages as compared to other workers engaged in various government departments.
This has made to hard to run their families.
Apart from the lower wages, the laborers of CAF & PD are also being deprived of their basic facilities.

He stated that a memorandum was already submitted to the concerned authority of CAF & PD urging to address their grievances but no positive response has been given to the association.
This lackadaisical attitude of the concerned authority towards the long pending demands of the laborers has compelled the Association to launch the cease work strike.
M Yaiskul, Director of CAF & PD, who arrived at the site of protest demonstration, told media persons that the laborers were engaged by contractors who kept changing from time to time.
So, their demands could not be met by CAF & PD easily as they are not directly recruited by the department.
But this does not mean that the government is ignoring their demands, the Director said, adding that there should be a proper way to dealt with it.
He also informed that the department has to hire laborers from the market for ensuring that daily necessary works in the godown are not disrupted by the cease work strike.
