Kalapani memorial to be unveiled on Aug 13

Chief minister N Biren assessed work progress of the on-going construction of a monolith inside the premises of Saheed Minar, Bir Tikendrajit Park on Wednesday.
Speaking to media persons, Biren recounted that the recent meeting of the state cabinet approved construction of the monolith in memory of those exiled martyrs who fought valiantly against the mighty British forces.
The CM informed that the monolith would be dedicated to those unsung heroes of Manipur who were exiled to Andaman and Nicobar Islands (popularly known as Kalapani Cellular Jail) after the Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 .
The names of the martyrs would be engraved on the monolith, he said.
Taking to Twitter, the chief minister said that the memorial stone will be inaugurated on August 13 .
"In remembrance of Manipuri freedom fighters who had martyred during exile, a memorial is being built alongside the Shaheed Minar.
It was discovered that people from different communities of Manipur had been martyred in exile during the British rule.
Memorial to be inaugurated on 13 Aug," CM Biren tweeted.
Informing that the names of the martyrs which will be inscribed on the memorial are available at the Department of Art and Culture, CM Biren said that anyone who has information of unsung heroes who have been exiled and martyred or never returned to the state can also submit the information to the Department of Art and Culture.
He also inspected the on-going construction of the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri and Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium, Luwangshangbam.
Briefly interacting with officials of work agencies and engineers at Mantripukhri civil secretariat, Biren advised them to ensure completion of the project within this year.
PHE minister Losii Dikho, forest and environment Awangbow Newmai, CAF&PD minister Th Satyabrata and others accompanied the CM during the inspection.
