Imphal, July 08 2013:
Senior Congress MLA Y Erabot has called for a collective effort from people to end the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the State.
He was speaking as Chief Guest of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Modern College, Porompat held here today.
The MLA further said that the State is now in a critical stage with problems of drugs on one hand and HIV/AIDS on the other hand.
So, the students should be sensitized on such issues.
The State ranks first in terms of highest number of HIV positive among the adults figuring about 42000, while Maharashtra tops the list of having the highest number of HIV positive people, the MLA highlighted.
Taking a dig on the State Government for failing to nab drug traffickers, Erabot said that the involvement of security personnel and kins of VVIPs in drug trafficking is well known to all.
The abolition of Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) in the aftermath of drugs seizure at Imphal Airport is a ploy to cover up the relatives of VVIPs involved in such anti-social activities, he averred.
The sensitive issues of drug trafficking and HIV/AIDS can never be solved unless the authorities concerned work sincerely.
Mere legislation and policies of the Government would not help in ending up such social issues, he contended.
MLA Erabot further appealed to the students to learn more about values and ethics and save the society from further degradation.
Principal of Modern College Dr K Biren was also present at the Golden Jubilee Celebration.
The celebration would continue till August 8 next.
Quiz and debate competitions, blood donation camp and tree plantation would be organized during the month-long celebration.
