Imphal, July 01 2011:
The Kuki Revolutionary Front (KRF) which is under the agreement of Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the state government is demanding a huge amount of money from the villagers of Ikou a village in Imphal East district along the Saikul road.
The UG group also threatened the villagers of dire consequences if they refuse to meet their demand.
They even issued life threats for ignoring its demand.
Expressing dissent on the huge monetary demand and life threats, a large number of people of Meetei, Kuki, Kom, Koireng, Naga and Nepali communities came out at Ikou Keithel and staged a sit in protest against the ill founded threats of the KRF which gives uncertainty and a reign of fear in the minds of the people of the area.
The protest started from 9 am and continued till 4 pm.
A woman who was participating in the protest told Hueiyen Lanpao that the people of the area are marginal workers just earning their daily bread.
KRF cadres on June 10 asked one Sandram Ibocha (30) son of S Ibobi of Ikou Keithel Awang Leikai to pay an amount of ' 1 lakh to them.
They asked him to come to a secluded place along NH 39 on a certain day.
Ibocha and a relative went there and met some cadres.
On their way home, police commandos frisked the bus on which they were travelling and apprehended a KRF cadre.
The KRF again sent a demand letter to Ibocha making him responsible for the arrest of their cadre and asked him to pay ' 3 lakh threatening his life if he failed to meet their demands.
Reacting against the unbearable demands, villagers appealed to the KRF not to give such a burden to the innocent people and to the state government to provide them security from such threats in future.
