Manipur tops NE in SBP implementation

Manipur has topped the list among North Eastern States including West Bengal in the implementation of Saakshar Bharat Programme (SBP) with altogether 55,841 adults of the states imparted education under the State Literacy Mission Authority, informed Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro.
Addressing media persons at his office chamber in Imphal Secretariat here today, Minister Okendro stated that Saakshar Bharat Programme, a centrally sponsored scheme of the Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), was launched by the Prime Minister on the occasion of International Literacy Day on September 8, 2009 .
The first phase of the mission was taken up in over 365 districts of the country where the literacy rate of females is below 50%.The programme is being implemented by National Literacy Mission Authority at the national level; the State Literacy Mission Authority at the state level; the District Lok Shiksha Samiti at the district level and the Gram Panchayat Lok Shiksha Samiti at the village level.
The Minister further stated that 257 adult education centres have been opened by the State Literacy Mission Authority in Thoubal, Chandel, Senapati and Tamenglong districts.
Altogether 77,263 illiterate adults have been enrolled in these centres and given the light of education.
Among them 55,841 adults passed the assessment conducted by the NIOS/NLMA and their names counted among the educated persons.
The remaining 21,422 adults will be appearing in the assessment which will be conducted all over the country on August 25 .
The Minister went on to point out that from among the 257 adult education centres established in the State, 20 of them have been upgraded under PPP model with funding from the Container Corporation of India Limited.
In recognition of the Saakshar Bharat Programme being taken up in India, the National Literacy Mission Authority would be awarded the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize, 2013 during a function to be held on September 9 at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, the Minister informed and added that the India Government has projected Manipur as the model State of Saakshar Bharat Programme.
P Veiphei, Commissioner of Education and Abdus Salam, Additional Director in-charge of Adult Education were also present during the press conference.
