Workshop on food security begins

A 3-day workshop on 'agriculture and food security in the context of climate change cum farmers' fair' was kick started at the ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Manipur Centre Imphal, Lamphelpat on Friday.
On the opening day of the event, Md Abdul Nasir, state Agriculture Minister; Rajesh Agarwal, IAS, Commissioner, Agriculture and Power; Dr SV Ngachan, Director, ICAR, Research Complex for NEH Region Umiam, Meghalaya; Palendro, Director, Department of Agriculture; Joute, Director, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Saratkumar, Director, Department of Fisheries graced it with their presence as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Agriculture Minister Nasir while addressing the inaugural function acknowledged the fact that while human beings embrace different religions they are at last depend on farmers and that this human race needs agriculture and horticulture throughout their life.
He further highlighted the need of developing agricultural sector, assuring that the state Agriculture Department will make efforts at the highest possible level to develop this sector.
Nasir also said the workshop cum fair will help the farmers in great extend.
Rajesh Agarwal, Commissioner of Agriculture and Power lucidly explained that farmers in the state are not getting the knowhow of the high-tech agricultural tools owing to which they are still using simple method in farming.
The farmers should be provided full knowledge of the modern technology by the Agriculture Department with special orientation, Agarwal suggested.
Dr SV Ngachan, Director, ICAR, Research Complex for NEH Region Umiam, Meghalaya, who was also speaking at the function, pointed out that considering the present climate change, in a few years later the condition will be deteriorated further.
He stressed on to begin adaptation of everything that human use and consume from right now.
Informing that National Food Security has also been introduced in Manipur, Palendro, Director, Department of Agriculture said the Agriculture Department has started choosing high yielding varieties of agricultural products by focusing on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Integrated Nutrient Management (INM)
and water harvesting.
At the function, different variety of rice and tomato seeds was also demonstrated by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Imphal.
