World Alzheimer's month observed

Under the theme, 'Remember me', JNIMS Psychiatry Department, Trained nurses Association of India, Manipur State Branch, TNAI JNIMS Unit, National Alliance for Elderly People Livelihood Research Advocacy and Chronic Diseases of India and ARDSI Manipur State Chapter j ointly observed World Alzhe-imer's Month 2016 at JNIMS conference hall today.
JNIMS Director Prof Deben Laishram, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Prof L Ranbir, Manipur State Social Welfare Board former Chairperson RK Nayansana, Dr K Shantibala of JNIMS Psychiatry Department and JNIMS Nursing Superintendent P Landhoni graced the function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Prof Deben Laishram said that proper care must be given to the persons suffering from Alzheimer's.They would suffer depression if they do not socialise, he added.
Stating that parents are priceless, Prof Deben said that elderly persons must be given respect and necessary affection and care.
In his speech, Prof L Ranbir stressed on the need to give proper awareness to the younger generation as most of them have nuclear family.
People used to give respect and care to their parents in the past as most of the people had joint family till 1970s, he added.
Stating that Alzheimer's is* also a type of Dimensia, Dr K Shantibala said that absence of mind and restlessness are the early symptoms of this disease.
She further said that women are more vulnerable than men and 40 per cent of the cases are due to genetic factor.
Stating that 5 per cent of the people whose age is above 65 years are generally affected by the disease, Dr Shantibala said that those who are at the age of 80 to 85 years are the most vulnerable group.
A man or woman who is affected by the disease may live from five to 10 years.
However, if proper diet and care are given and regular physical exercise is done, Alzheimer's patients can live up to 20 years, Dr Shantibala said'.
Gifts were presented to the elderly persons at the function.
