Workers' Union Manipur (WUM) has urged all concerned to stop charging extra money from construction workers in the name of issuing cards for different schemes taken up underthe Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board.
WUM president K London said Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board under the Ministry of Labour, Government of India, is taking up various beneficiary schemes for construction workers.
To avail the benefits, construction workers must register themselves with the Board after which a Labour Card will be issued in their name.
To get a Labour Card a worker needs to submit a copy of their birth certificate, passport size and stamp size photos, a recommendation letter by a contractor, registration fee of Rs 50 and a monthly contribution fee of Rs 2.WUM has however come to learn that concerned officials are charging between Rs 500 to 1000 for the registration and issue of the Labour Card, he stated.
The union while alleging that the cards are being issued to non-construction workers on payment of certain amount of money said WUM will begin monitoring the registration and card issuing process.
He has further appealed to all concerned to stop charging extra money from construction workers on the pretext of issuing Labour Cards.
WUM will take up stem actions against those officials indulging in the malpractice, he stated.

Till now, about 60 construction workers have availed the benefits provided by the different schemes taken up under the Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board.
