Ng Hungyo laid to rest with full honour

Eulogized as veteran politician, editor, educator and social activist, Ngathingkhui Hungyo (69) who died on Thursday morning, was on Saturday laid to rest with full customary honour in his native village Sorde in Phungyar subdivision.
His mortal remains was laid to eternal rest in the village cemetery at 12 pm today amidst mourning and prayers.
A host of his close political associates, church leaders, social activists and many others from different walks of life paid their last respects to the departed leader during the funeral service held at his village residence.
Beseeching prayers and support for her bereaved family, Ms Valleyrose Hungyo, wife of late Ngathingkhui Hungyo, poured out her feelings and said that: "My beloved husband has left after accomplishing whatever that was assigned to him, it is now for us to take up where has left to fulfill his vision" .
Many speakers during the service eulogised late Hungyo as a prominent public figure not just in Phungyar subdivision but in the whole Ukhrul district.
"He was a man of vision and discipline who dedicated his life for the service of his people," said fellow social activist Soreingam.
Ng Hungyo died at RIMS, Imphal of cardiac arrest at the age of 69 in the early hours of December 10 .
He is survived by his wife Ms Valleyrose Hungyo, one son and three daughters.
Soon after attaining MSc from Poona University 1974, Chief Minister Yangmaso Shaiza offered him a lecturer post but before long he gave it up for the larger cause of community service.
From 1975 till 1978 he served as General Secretary of TNL.
In 1988 March, Hungyo who was then the General Secretary of Manipur Samata Party, led all Naga party members in resigning enmasse following alleged suppression of Naga voices by the State Government.
Teaming up with the resigned Naga members, he then initiated for a common platform to bring peace and unity through reconciliation among the Nagas.
Irrespective of factions, the team met leaders of Naga Hohos, political, national, social leaders mobilizing for it.
Eventually, Naga National Party (NNP) was declared in Dimapur and registered with the Election Commission of India (ECI) as a political party.
His team also met then Nagaland minister Vamuzo and impressed upon him about unification of Naga peoples in NE region in the 1990s when animosity among different Naga tribes were intense.
He then made his maiden entry into political life as independent candidate during the 1990 MLA election.
Ever since he had contested the election four times consecutively but came a cropper each time.
To his credit, thus far Ng Hungyo had successfully established the first Tangkhul newspaper The Aja Daily and the Jhumanleng Educational Institution at Sorde village.
While the newspaper has attained its 23 rd year of publication, the institution is imparting education to around 113 students including orphans.
