Imphal, April 20 2012:
Infuriated villagers of Jessami village of Ukhrul district in the Manipur-Nagaland border dismantled and destroyed police property after the police refused to provide them escort to go to the site where the dispute had occurred a few days back.
As tension was still high after six villagers of Jessami were assaulted and abducted by villagers of Meluri, Nagaland on Wednesday, villagers of Jessami, requested the police stationed at the village to provide them escort to go to the disputed site where the unfortunate incident had happened to collect some of the goods left behind during the fracas, but the police denied their request saying that they do not have the required manpower and permission from the D.C.was also needed, it is reported.
This led to the irate villagers to dismantle and destroy the police property in rage, the report said.
The villagers are now reportedly demanding an IRB post to be opened at Jessami and at the same time to open a police outpost under an SDPO.
On learning about the dismantling of the police property, SP, Ukhrul K.Kabib rushed to the border village and controlled the situation, added police source.
It may be remembered that an IRB post was opened at Jessami after Nagaland government constructed a rest house in Jessami a few years back, but the IRB post was recalled for reasons known only to the government of Manipur.
