Battalions under 26 Sector of Hqs IGAR (S) celebrated the 64th Independence Day throughout Chandel district with traditional fervour and enthusiasm.
According to a press release issued by PRO Hqs IGAR (S), the celebrations were given an auspicious start by hoisting of the National tricolour by Brig SK Bhanot, Commander of 26 Sector at Pallel.
In his address, the Commander lauded the efforts of the local populace in bringing peace, harmony and development in the district.
42 AR participated in the celebrations at Chandel headquarters while 8 AR, 37 AR, 43 AR, 22 Grenadiers, 29 AR and 31 AR organised cultural programmes and medical camps at their respective locations.
The press release added that 15 AR celebrated Independence Day at Thoubal headquarters.
Thoubal DC W Rajen and 15 AR Commander inspected the parade comprising of AR and police personnel.
Similar celebrations were also organised 39 AR and and other Sectors under the aegis of IGAR (S).
28 Assam Rifles celebrated the day at Andro Khunou (Torongthel).
Sweets and Indian tricolours were distributed to the children of the village, said a press release.
Celebration at CCpur: Churachandpur yesterday witnessed an impressive Independence Day celebration at the Lamka Public ground with over 44 march past contingents and 12 cultural troupe exhibiting a spectacular display, attracting a princely turn out in thousands, reports our correspondent.
The celebration that began at 8.30 am amidst cheerful glare and crammed gallery of the play ground that have just witnessed a complete facelift was however stained by the uniform NCC cadres that run on and off the parade contingents' column.
The NCC contingents were allegedly withdrawn in the last minute in protest against the physical assault on the district's NCC in-charge the night before by security personnel on duty.
Eighteen appreciation awards, including two for bravery; eight red blankets and awards for five best performing villages in developmental works were handed-out on the occasion that was well attended by civil and security officials of the district.
The celebration also marked a milestone in the district's history as it was the first main event the newly elected MDCs have attended.
Deputy Commissioner Jacintha Lazarus graced the occasion as Chief Guest and unfurled the National flag besides inspecting the march past contingents.
She also addressed the gathering later in the day.
