Killing of Ranjita: Yairipok protests, Aug 6 deadline set

Demanding to produce the killer(s), the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the killing of Ranjita today staged demonstration rallies at Yairipok area in Thoubal district.
It may be noted here that Lourembam Ranjita Devi (33) w/o L.Loken Singh of Yairipok Khoirom Mathak near handpump, who had gone for work at her own paddy field at Kakmayai Mamang Loukol under Yairipok police station was found stabbed to death by unknown persons.
According to family sources, Ranjita went out alone for the work in their paddy field after taking lunch around 11 am on August 2 last.
As she did not returned in time, her husband Loken proceeded to the field to look for her.
However, she could not be traced in the darkness.
When the local people together undertook a search in the field, Ranjita's body was found lying in her field with stabbing marks on her left chin and neck.
Local people suspecting she might have been murdered after being raped have threatened to launch agitations demanding production and punishment of the murderers.
Mother of 2 sons and 2 daughters, Ranjita was a hard working woman whose husband also earns by doing other works, family sources said.
Post-mortem on the body was conducted at JNIMS here today.
Decrying the killing, the JAC formed against the brutal murder of Ranjita today staged demonstration rallies and refused to collect the dead body until the killers are produced.
A large number of people from Yairipok Khoirom, Kekru Malom, Leirongthel Ningel, Kakmayai, Heitroipokpi muslim and Khamlang hill took out a massive rally on around 30 truck vehicles.
A public meeting was also held at Khoirom Mathak Leikai Keithel with Pradhan S.Kumar of Leirongthel Ningel GP and ZP member Kh.

Setting August 6 as the deadline, the meeting resolved to demand immediate production of the murderers and provision of compensation to the bereaved family.
With formation of a JAC, the gathering decided not to accept the dead body until the killers of Ranjita are arrested.
Later, Police blocked the rally at Bamol Leikai and another meeting was held in the presence of local MLA Keisham Meghachadra, who assured the gathering that he would make all possible efforts in connection with the issue.
Appealing to the people to extend full cooperation to the police, SP Thoubal Dr..SIbomcha pledged that police would conduct fair investigation into the incident to produce the culprits at the earliest possible.
He urged the gathering to inform him or his subordinates, if there is any dissatisfaction during the process.
With the joining of people of surrounding villages and market vendors of Yairipok bazaar, shops remained closed for today.
Meanwhile, the JAC dispatched a memorandum to the Home Minister, DC Thoubal, SP Thoubal and other concerned authority through MLA Meghachadra.
Even as post mortem on the dead body was conducted at JNIMS, the dead body has not been taken.
Meanwhile, Police reportedly recovered a knife, a chapel and a bicycle from the spot today morning.
