80th Nupi Lan observed across the State, women leaders stress on need for unity

Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Lup (KANGLAMEI), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (Poirei Leimarol), Ching Tarn United Women Association (CHITUWA), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Nupi Samaj, Tami-Chingmi, MEPWAK, Kakwa and WUYOK, under 80th Nupi Lan Observation Committee, organised the 80th Nupi Lan event at Keisham Leikai Yumjao Lairembi community hall today.
AMKIL president Phangjoubam Sakhi, KANGLAMEI president Y Leirikleima, Poirei Leimarol president L Memchoubi, CHITUWA president M Purnimashi Leima, Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) convenor Jitendra Ningomba, Kabui Mother's Association (KAMA) president G Atongpi Kamejpui, Kshetrigao Meira Paibi Apunba Lup (KHEMPAL) president Ipham Jano Begum attended the event as the presidium members.
During the event, floral tributes were paid in memory of the brave mothers and women who sacrificed their lives during in the Nupi Lans of 1904 and 1939.Speaking on the sideline of the event, AMKIL president Ph Sakhi said that the two historic Nupi Lan which occurred in the State is in sort, a source of pride for the State which shows the true strength and bravery of the Manipuri women.
Pointing out that now, the people need to be reminded about why the two Nupi Lans occurred, Sakhi appealed to the people to follow in the footsteps of the brave mother and fight unitedly fir the welfare of the State and the motherland.
KANGLAMEI president Y Leirikleima said that the two Nupi Lans occurred as a result of the Manipur women rising up against the atrocities and oppression of the British.
Even though the two Nupi Lans might be viewed as bring triggered by scarcity of rice and sending the men to Kabow for bringing wood for building bungalows, it is worth noting that the two events were in fact revolts against the oppressive nature of the British, she explained.
Poirei Leimarol president L Memchoubi said that now, Manipur has been riddled with various issues.
The borders/boundaries of Manipur is gradually shrinking and the people of the hills and valley who have been living in peace with one another since time immemorial, have started feeling disgruntled with one another, she added.
Appealing to all to work for peace and unity among the various communities, she urged the people to try and leave behind a shining Manipur for the future generations.
On the other hand she said that the people of Manipur should not become relaxed and complacent just because Inner Line Permit System has been extended to Manipur.
It is the responsibility of the Government to make the people aware of all the details concerning the said ILPS, she said, and demanded the Government to also make the people aware of all the necessary details concerning the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
Under no circumstances can the CAB be allowed to affect Manipur, she cautioned.
PPCM convenor Jitendra Ningomba reminded that following the announcement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding extension of ILPS in Manipur, an official gazette was issued yesterday thereby enforcing the system in the State.
However, the Government must inform the people/public about all the details of the said ILPS, he demanded.
Appealing the Government to do the needful at the earliest concerning the said system, Jitendra said that despite the good news of ILPS being extended in the State and the assurance that CAB will now not cover Manipur, the people should still remain alert.
The 80th Nupi Lan was also observed today by various associations including All Manipur Democratic Women Association (AMDWA), Republican Party of India (A) Manipur State Committee, Manipur Peoples' Democratic Front etc.
