Imphal, August 05 2017:
The Loktak Project Affected Areas Action Committee, Committee on Human Rights, Manipur (COHR), Centre for Research and Advocacy Manipur (CRA) and Irabot Foundation Manipur (IFM) have drawn the attention of the people to the absence of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and the Government of Manipur regarding the operation and functioning of the 105 MW Loktak Multipurpose Hydro Electric Project which was commissioned in 1984 .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, CRA secretary Jiten Yumnam , alleged that NHPC has been given a free hand and has also refused to take responsibility for the suffering caused to the affected people and the environmental hazards in Loktak wetlands .
He said that the State Government should review the 105 MW Loktak Multipurpose Hydro Electric Project and de-commission the Ithai Barrage at the earliest as it has resulted in the submersion of more than 83 hectares of the surrounding land.
Jiten Yumnam further urged the State Government to intervene and look into the functioning of the NHPC and the damage caused by the project before the affected people take up necessary action to close down NHPC.
