Officials of Social Welfare Department and AISF inspected the anganwadi centre at Ghari Maning Leikai after the All India Students' Federation, Manipur State Council exposed the presence of cockroaches in the food items supplied to the children of the centre .
The food safety officer also collected samples of the food item for further investigation in the laboratory .
The Social Welfare Director Jacintha Lazarus has banned the use or consumption of the food item until the laboratory test result arrives.
Speaking to media persons at the Department's office at North AOC, Jacintha Lazarus said that this is the first time such a case has cropped up and even the woman who allegedly found the insects in the food was also present when the officials of the Department met the beneficiaries at Ghari area.
She said that the woman found the insects in the food item when she opened the packaging for the second time.
There is a possibility that the insects might have entered the food packaging when it was opened for use the first time, Jacintha expressed.
AISF State Secretary Kh Rameshwar Singh urged the public to remain calm and stated that the woman has admitted that the insects might have entered the food packaging due to carelessness on her part .
Food Safety Officer, Imphal West, M Dinesh stated that the test result might take around 14 days.
