Fortnight observance against crime on women concludes

Imphal, December 13 2013 : Crime against women has been there in the society since time immemorial.

It was the World Health Organisation (WHO) which started the protests against checking female infanticide to protect the lives of women, maintained MLA Dr.Ng.

Bijoy while speaking at the closing function of the International Fortnight Observation protesting violence against women at Hotel Classic here under the theme "From Peace in the Home to peace in the World: Let's challenge militarism and end violence against women" .

MLA Bijoy who attended the valedictory function as Chief Guest further said that the magnitude of impact is higher in case of violence upon women by women themselves rather than by menfolk.

Domestic violence rendered upon women at family level by in-laws created a series of psychological as well as physical disorder in women's health and mind which in long run, devastate their lives.

He urged the people not to be pessimistic in their outlook and strive hard to completely uproot the evils which cause women to suffer at loose hands.

Dr.Dhanabir, social scientist who was also present at the occasion spoke on the factors denying full democratic rights to the people of the country even though India is said to be largest democracy in the world.

According to him, casteism and communalism are the main evils in the way of ensuring democratic rights to the people.

The increase in more Private Public Partnership (PPP) also triggers crimes in the state.

As such, he suggested now is the right time to protest against PPP so that further crimes bound to occur may be prevented.

The 19-day fortnight observation which started on November 25, 2013 was jointly organized by Women Action for Development (WAD), United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNM-M), North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF), New Life Foundation (NLF), Resource Upliftment Centre for Human Interest (RUCHI), Peoples' Platform Secretarial (PPS), Village Women Coordinating Committee (VWCOC), Self Support Group (SSG), Conflict Widows Forum (CoWF) Manipur, Domestic Violence Survivors Forum (DVSF), Khwairamband Keithel Lambi Matai Potpham Phambi Lup (KKLMPPL), Association of Landmine Survivors (ALS), Survivors Action for Human Rights Manipur (SAHRM) and Care Me Group (CMG) was participated by more than 3000 people including representatives of victims of violence against women, development organisation, civil society organisation, research institute, foundations, police, media, academies and government officials in different activities.

The observation has been organized at many places in the state.

At the end of the fortnight long observance, an 8-point resolution was adopted.

These included complete investigation in all the cases related to violence against women and make charge-sheet for speedy trial in the court for various women crime victims, fulfillment of the Supreme Court's order regarding the street vendors allowing them to sell their vegetables, clothes, fish etc.

at their original place by creating a natural market, establishment of a special 5-member committee consisting of 3 women and 2 men in the Police department and the Home department to investigate the delayed cases related to violence against women by defining clear term of preference, ratification of the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court as early as possible and ratify the optional protocol II of Geneva Convention, establishment of a special court or Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the cases of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and use of rape as an instrument of war in Manipur, providing special funds for rehabilitation of victims, provide health care and trauma counseling with special attention to the victims of the crime, establishment of Independent Commission Against Corruption (IAC) to investigate corruption and illegal trades specially drugs and punish those found involved according to the law and conducting medical audit in Manipur urgently in order to reconfirm the negligence of medical team, wrong diagnosis and defamilator in the context of frequent deaths related to delivery.

A Mobi, editor, Manipur This Week, N.Jeet, sub-editor of ISTV and Professor Chinglen Maisnam, Economics Department, Manipur University (MU) were also present during the closing function as Presidium members.
