Imphal, April 17 2022:
Commemorating the public uprising of 1980 against uncontrolled influx of non-locals, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) observed the 42nd Realisation Day at the Pishum Chingamacha memorial site, here on Sunday.
AMSU president Haobijam Chalamba hoisted the union's flag at the memorial site and led the participants in offering floral tributes to the portraits of martyred students, Potsangbam Premananda and Huidrom Lokendro.
It was followed by a rally from the memorial site to Manipur College where the main observance function was held with AMSU former president Birendra Chingakham, AMSU incumbent president Haobijam Chalamba and JCILPS co-convener Warepam Second as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Chalamba called for a united stand by people of all communities against the uncontrolled influx of non-locals, which has become an issue in the society.
The union and its members initiated a movement about four decades ago as they saw the possible impact of non-local influx, he said and stressed the need for assessing the present situation and fate of the society as the state is facing the same issue that the union foresaw 40 years ago.
Everybody knows what will be the condition of the state once the railway service reaches Imphal, he added.
Though ILP System has been implemented in the state, it is implemented just in the book.
The government has not taken up any significant steps to strictly enforce it by putting in place necessary regulations.
The state is in a crucial situation and it is high time for people of all communities to take a united stand.
The movement is not only for CSOs and student bodies but for all the indigenous people of the state, he exhorted.
