Imphal, February 15 2013:
The Bailey bridge constructed over Lokchao River to connect Moreh in Manipur with Tamu in Myanmar, is almost on the brink of collapse as both the Indian and Myanmar authorities has failed to pay necessary attention for its up-keep for quite some time.
The said Bailey bridge was constructed some 45 years back.
In order to make known that it belongs to both Myanmar and Manipur, the bridge has been painted with in two different colours on either side starting from the middle.
On the Indian border side, just near the foot of the bridge, the post of Indian Para military forces is located while on the other side, the Myanmar armies are being posted.
People on either side of the border have to cross this bridge if they have to come to each other's side.
As such, this bridge has become one of the most important bridges for the two neighbouring countries.
However, from prolonged negligence, the connecting rods and screws of the said bridge have rusted and some are missing.
The main body part of the bridge has also corroded.
The worst condition of the bridge lies on the Myanmar side.
