Five days capacity building prog for regional zoo keepers begins

Forest Department Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroisemba kick-started a five day "Capacity building prog for regional zoo keepers of North East States" at Manipur Forest Training School, Koirengei today.
The training was organised under the sponsorship of Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi.
Member Secretary, Central Zoo Authority MOEF & CC, New Delhi Dr AK Nayak, Principal Chief Conservator Forests/Wildlife & Chief Wild Life Warden D J N Anand attended the programme as chief guest and president respectively.
Chief Conservator of Forest Wildlife (IFS) Anurag Bajpai was also seated on the dais.
Altogether 22 individuals from different parts of North East States are participating in the training programme.
Dr AK Nayak, while speaking at the event, said that the Central Zoo Authority has the privilege to grant recognition or and deny recognise to a Zoo.
Maintaining that there are 141 Zoos in India, he added that license for nearly 25 Zoos have been declined by the Central Zoo Authority for not adhering to its guidelines He added that the de-recognised Zoos failed to maintain cleanliness, hygienic living condition etc which cost them their license.
Dr Nayak went on to state that the wild animals, who are brought at the Zoo, should be kept in an appropriate environment almost similar to its habitat.
Underlining the importance of veterinary care of the animals in the Zoo, he said that they should be properly taken care of including feeding, cleanliness etc by the Zoo keeper.
A zoo keeper should build a relationship with the animals of the zoo and understand their needs at all times, he added.
He further stated that a zoo keeper should inform the supervisor or authority concerned whenever they see anything unusual.
