Imphal, September 22 2018:
Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has strongly condemned the Manipur University raid and accused the State and Central Government of 'terrorising' the varsity in the name to bring normalcy in the campus.
It further opposed the move of the State to book the innocent students under several sections of the IPC such as "attempt to murder, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, extortion, wrongful confinement" etc.
"We cannot deny the fact that the unarmed students have been fighting against the corrupt head of the institution namely AP Pandey and his removal from the post of VC," asserted the rights forum in a statement today issued by its secretary T Shadishkanta.
It further questioned the intention and morale of the State Government for sending in army of armed security personnel in the varsity.
"Why did the police entered the MU campus & hostels of the University at the mid-night disturbing the students who were studying for their on-going second & fourth semester Post Graduate examination?," asked the forum.
"Was prior permission taken from the warden of the hostel to enter the premises/rooms?" asked the forum.
Who gave the permission and how male police personnel entered the Girls Hostels No 3, asked the rights forum.
"The State Police Department fails to arrest rapist and other criminals from absconding, however, hundreds of paramilitary forces and the State armed police were deployed in the middle of the night to arrest unarmed students who were either sleeping or studying at the time," said the rights protection forum condemning the crack down on innocent students and teachers.
The raid has once again destroyed the hard earned normalcy in the varsity, said the forum and continued that such incidents will only paralysed the whole education system of the State.
The forum alleged that the whole impasse is a "preplanned crisis for the Central Government to make Manipur more dependent on the Central" and destroy MU and cripple the higher education in the State.
It appealed the Government of Manipur and the Governor to immediately remove security forces stationed inside the campus of the varsity for lasting peace in the interest of the students.
It advised the State Government and Centre to uphold the interest of the people and give meaning to democracy.
It also appealed the Centre and State Government to withdraw AFSPA 1958 .
