Imphal, January 14 2015:
Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union-Regional Campus Manipur (IGNTUSU-RCM) on Wednesday announced that it would embark on a fast-unto-death stir beginning January 16, saying the Manipur Government was not paying heed to its demands.
IGNTUSU-RCM had earlier on January 7 threatened to launch a fast-unto-death agitation over the Manipur Government's inability to complete the on-going infrastructure development work on the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University-Regional Campus, Manipur (IGNTU-RCM).
A release issued by the student body said it has decided to go on strike from January 16 as the state Government is not fulfilling its demands before the given deadline.
IGNTUSU-RCM said it will seek help and support from other tribal student organisations in the country in enforcing the strike to be launched at the varsity's temporary campus, Adimjati Complex here.
The union's key demands include completion of approach road and other development works like electrification and water supply connection on the main varsity campus at Makhan in Senapati district quickly.
The construction of main buildings for the main campus of IGNTU-RCM has been complete but development of hostels, buildings to accommodate students, staff, faculty and many other members are yet to be started.
At the moment, the union's immediate demands are water supply, approach road and electricity so the varsity can start functioning soon.
Recognition of IGNTU-RCM as an autonomous Central University independent from IGNTU, Amarkantak, reservation in recruiting teaching and non-teaching staff and admission of students, appointment of a full-time director for the varsity, separate fund allocation are other demands of the union.
