Drunken IRB men thrash traffic cop

Strongly condemning the alleged assault of a traffic police personnel who was coming in an auto rickshaw by five personnel of 5 IRB under drunken stupor at Thenggu Chingjin (Keikon) under Heingang Police Station, Imphal East on September 1 around 7.10 pm, a public meeting was convened at Awang Potsangbam Khunou Community Hall today and resolved to launch intense agitation if appropriate action is not taken up against the involved IRB personnel at the earliest.
The injured traffic police personnel identified as Thoudam Gunindro (27) s/o Th Modhu of Awang Chingri village along with six passengers including female was travelling in an auto rickshaw bearing registration no.MN1L-8320 from Nagamapal and heading towards Awang Potsangbam when the incident took place.
After reaching Koirengei area, the five personnel from 5 IRB who are all drunk asked the driver of the auto rickshaw to carry them as well up to Thenggu Chingjin where their post is situated.
The personnel who do not speak in Manipuri forcibly stepped in the auto rickshaw despite the refusal of the driver as the vehicle was already filled by other passengers.
However, after reaching their destination, they refused to give reasonable passenger fare to the driver and even threatened the driver with dire consequences if he did not stop his vehicle whenever they asked to do so.
When Th Gunindro intervened and tried to pacify the IRB personnel, he was beaten up black and blue leaving him badly wounded.
Gunindro is now undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital.
Speaking to media persons, Soubam (o) Madhabi, president of Koirengei Awang Apunba Nupi Lup said that such incident involving IRB personnel had already occurred in the past but no action had been taken up.
She cautioned that different form of intense agitation will be initiated if the concerned authorities fail to take up action against the erring IRB personnel this time.
Today's public meeting was also attended by members of Chingmeirong Awang Diesel Auto Drivers' Union.
