Imphal, September 02 2014:
A traffic control policeman has been brutally thrashed by Indian Reserved Batallion (IRB) personnel yesterday.
The incident happened yesterday at around 7:30 pm in front of 4th batallion IRB gate at Thenguchingjin, Imphal East district.
Both 4th IRB and 5th IRB are stationed in the area.
According to a report, five IRB personnel boarded an auto-rickshaw at Koirengei Thongkhong.
The auto was coming from Imphal along with some passengers.
All five of them were allegedly drunk and clad in civilian fatigue.
On reaching their destination, the auto pulled over in front of 4th IRB camp gate.
One of the five personnel took out a Rs 500 note and gave it to the auto driver
for the fare.
When the driver replied that he didnt have change they started intimidating him for not pulling over at where they wanted to board in the beginning.
A traffic police man was also travelling in the same vehicle back home after his duty.
When the traffic police intervened and tried to stop the quarrel, the IRB personnel started thrashing him badly.
Trying to save himself from the thrashing, he ran inside the IRB camp.
Unfortunately, he still got the beating untill a senior officer came out to the scene and stopped them.
The driver has been identified as Pheiroijam Rambabu (40) s/o Nimaichand of Awang Potsangbam Khullen whereas the Traffic Control Police has been identified as Thoudam Gojendra (27) s/o Modhu of Awang Tingri.
Infuriated by the incident, a public meeting was held today at Awang Potshangbam Community Hall under the aegis of the Korengei Wangma Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and Chingmeirong Awang Diesel Auto Drivers Union.
Meira paibi president, Madhabi said such incidents of drunk IRB personnel intimidating common people and initiating fight have been reported repeatedly in the past too.
She said that State security forces are supposed to protect the life of people and maintain peace and harmony in the State.
On contrary, they have become the ones whose presence upset peace in the State.
The meeting resolved to urge the concerned authority to take appropriate action against the accused IRB personnel.
