A truck owner was injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire towards a truck loaded with potatoes at Bungmol village under Sapermeina police station today at about 4.30 am.
The truck also suffered substantial damages during the firing.
The truck owner is identified as Kharga Tamang (29) of Paorel Basti on IT road.
The driver of the truck (AS 25/2063) is identified as Md Nasimuddin of Yairipok Yambem.
The potatoes were meant to be transported to a Bihari Trader at Nagamapal identified as Garjan.
The truck was hired by the Bihari trader to transport the potatoes from a firm located at Paoyal Basti on IT road.
Besides the driver and the owners of the truck, four persons who had sold the potatoes were aboard the truck when it came under fire from the gunmen.
According to reports the gunmen numbering around 4/5 and attired in sky blue battle fatigues signaled the truck to stop near Bungmol village.
The gunmen opened around 40/50 rounds of gun fire when the truck refused to stop and sped away.
The owner of the truck who was sitting behind the driver received a bullet injury on the right arm.
The left rear wheel of the truck, front glass and the radiator were damaged in the gun fire.
However the truck did not stop even with the punctured tyre and made its way to Sapermeina police station where they reported the matter to the police.
Sources said the gunmen used sophisticated weapons including AK-47 rifles and SLRs.
