Imphal-Mandalay bus service from March

Imphal, January 24 2013:
The much awaited Imphal-Mandalay bus service between Manipur and Myanmar would be introduced by the month of March with one trip in a week from either side.
An official source informed that ground work for the cross-border bus service is almost complete.
For this, an immigration office would be opened at the Moreh Trade Centre.
To facilitate the proposed international bus service, Manipur Development Society has been entrusted with the task of expanding and developing some bus terminals of Transport Department at Moreh.
Moreover, necessary measures have been initiated to build a multi-storey shopping complex near Moreh Gate No II.
Construction work of Integrated Check Post would also be taken up very soon, informed the official.

Though a general agreement has been reached to open border haats at New Somtal in Chandel and Behiang in Churachandpur district, the Government of India is yet to issue the official notification in this regard.
Meanwhile, the State Government has been working to include teak in the list of trade items between India and Myanmar through Moreh.
The State Government is also planning to develop a timber park at Kuraopokpi near Kakching.
On the other hand, a meeting presided by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce has deliberated on the ongoing as well as upcoming projects which are being implemented/would be implemented in the North East region with Export Development Fund.
One agenda of the meeting was opening a common packaging centre at the Nilakuthi Food Park.
Officials of the State Commerce and Industries Department were also present at the meeting.
The proposed Imphal-Mandalay bus service has been in the pipeline for some years now and is in line with the Look East Policy taken up by the Government of India.
In May this year, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh visited Myanmar.
