Jiribam, December 20 2015:
Vehicular traffic came to a halt on the Imphal-Silchar road on the National Highway 37, connecting Manipur with Assam, on the first day of the 32-hour bandh at Jiribam in Manipur today.
Roads connecting Imphal, Nungba and Tamenglong also wore deserted looks.
A large number of bandh supporters came out and blocked vehicular movement along Jiribam- Imphal road.
Jiribam police personnel are on alert to avoid any untoward incident.
The supporters blocked the highway at Jiribam bridge making vehicles impossible to move on the stretch, police said.
No shops and business establishments were opened at Jiribam Bazar.
All educational institutions remained closed, they said.
The bandh was called by the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) to press their demand for a full-fledged Jiribam district.
Speaking to media persons, JDDC chairperson H Mema Devi condemned the alleged negligence of their demands by the State Government.
She said that the committee will continue to launch rigorous forms of agitation unless the State Government declare Jiribam as a full-fledged revenue district.
Effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and local MLA Th Debendra were also burned by bandh supporters this evening near Kamrangkha, Jiribam.
