MoRTH approves new highway to Moreh

The Minis-
try of Road Transport and
Highways (MoRTH) has
approved a proposal to con-
struct a new highway from
Heirok to Moreh via Machi.
Works and Transport Min-
ister Dr Kh Ratankumar held
a meeting with former Union
Transport Secretary B Chhi-
ber, National Highway Infra-
structure Development Cor-
poration (NHIDC) managing
director Anand Kumar, Chief
Secretary O Nabakishore and
Deputy Commissioners yes-
terday, informed an official
source.
Steep gradients of the ex-
isting Imphal-Moreh highway
which would be difficult for
movement of heavy trucks
and the huge amount that
would be required for re-
alignment of the highway
were also discussed during
the meeting.
Subsequently, the meeting
agreed on constructing a new
highway from Heirok to
Moreh via Machi.
The meeting further delib-
erated on land acquisition for
the new highway which
would be constructed with
investment from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
According to the official
source, the existing Imphal-Moreh highway would remain even
after the new highway is constructed.
Imphal-Wangjing section of
the highway would be developed as a four-lane road while
Wangjing to Khudengthabi would be expanded to make it a twolane
road.
Moreover Imphal-Moirang road would be expanded to
the level of a four-lane road.
Plans are also afoot to construct a new
highway from Imphal to Kohima without touching the existing
Imphal-Kohima highway, and the two routes would form a twin
highway.
The Government has plans to construct Tousem-
Haflong road, Tousem-Tamenglong road and develop
Imphal-Tamenglong road via Kangchup.
The meeting also discussed about Imphal-Jiribam highway,
conveyed the official.
