An indefinite economic blockade of the national highway 39 ha been re-imposed from 6 pm this evening, by the Senapati District Students Association, in protest against the assault on student hostellers of the Mount Everest College near Taphou by IRB escorts of oil tankers yesterday evening, according to a reliable source.
It is leant that in the assault by the IRB men yesterday, 13 received injuries and six needed to be hospitalized at the Senapati district hospital.
Because of telephone lines disruptions however, Senapati could not be contacted for details of the developments in the regards.
The police also have very hazy information about the blockade and other developments.
The source said the SDSA is now demanding the termination of the IRB men involved from their job; a public apology and adequate compensation for the injured students.
Earlier in the day, students picketed the Senapati DC and SP offices demanding action against the responsible IRB men.
It is also learnt that 71 oil tankers have reached Imphal this afternoon.
Meanwhile, all Manipur Road Transport Drivers� and Motor Workers� Union charged that local people near Senapati forest gate had yesterday attacked a convoy of 79 Imphal-bound oil tankers causing injury to several drivers and handymen by pelting stones at them.
Condemning the incident, the union said in a statement that one of the motor workers, Thangjam Kulla from Chingmeirong, received serious injury.
The union also expressed surprise that the incident occurred in the presence of escort personnel.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Transport Joint Coordinating Committee has also condemned the alleged assault on a bus driver, conductor afternoon at Yumnam Bus parking by some locals in connection with fare.
The committee has also said the two buses of the Thoubal District Bus Owners� Welfare Association which had been banned indefinitely by the AMSU Thoubal district committee will resume their services from September 9.
