Imphal, September 08:
BSF DIG (Manipur and Nagaland) PK Mishra today said BSF would not tolerate any instances of excess and indiscipline by its troops.
On the custodial death of W Brojen, Mishra said any personnel found guilty by the Staff Court of Inquiry would be given punishment as means of deterrent.
Brojen was picked up by BSF personnel and later handed dead to the police.
Mishra said the mode of interrogation adopted by the BSF personnel concerned would be minutely investigated.
He dismissed any doubts that the guilty would be spared.
The DIG told newsmen at Koirengei today that tackling militancy in Manipur is more complex than in Kashmir.
He added that it is relatively easier to identify militants in Kashmir as most of them are foreign mercenaries.
The local populace also extends their support to the security personnel and this makes the task of the troops much easier.
However, here, Mishra said, the local population does not divulge information on militants and this makes the tasks all that much more complicated.
Mishra further said that three Coys of the BSF are deployed on NH-39 and the troops are on the alert throughout the day to avert any unwanted incident.
Other than the stray incidents of stone pelting, situation is now okay on the highway, he informed.
Strict instructions have been given to the troops to restrain themselves and not to open indiscriminate firings if they come under attack from militants in civilian areas, he said adding such instructions have been given to prevent civilian casualties.
To a query why the BSF which should be deployed at the borders are used for counter insurgency operations, Mishra said nothing much should be read into this and the service the BSF can be called for any purpose as the situation demands.
Pointing out that security deployment at the Indo-Myanmar is insufficient; Mishra said there is no point in deploying heavy security inside the border while leaving the international borders unattended.
