In a significant shift in their political stand, Kuki UG groups raised no objection to Independence Day celebration this time.
The Kuki UG groups have been boycotting the event for the last 22 years.
The function organised under the aegis of the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council at Kangpokpi Thomas ground started with the hoisting of the tri-colour by the ADC's Chairman SH Seipu.
The Independence Day function was also attended by ADC Sadar Hills officials, police officials and officials of para-military forces.
Addressing the function, SH Seipu said that the function was being held in a free atmosphere for the first time after 22 years.
This was possible after the Kuki groups who were boycotting the same event demanding Kuki land signed SoO pact with the Government to pave way for a political dialogue.
Conveying the reported assurance given to him by the Chief Minister to grant full fledged district status to Sadar Hills, Seipu said that he has appealed to the Chief Minister to inaugurate the mini-secretariat.
Seipu, the chief guest of the function, also received salutes given by 15 march past contingents comprising of police and students.
Dance and music were also presented by different cultural troupes as a part of the Independence Day celebrations.
