Imphal, July 16 2020:
Saying that drugs addiction has a ripple effect which not only hurt the users but also the State at large, Coalition Against Drugs And Alcohol (CADA) has demanded capital punishment for drug traffickers to the State Government.
In a statement, CADA secretary-general Geetchandra Mangang said that when observed closely it is vividly visible that most crimes in the State are related to drug addiction.
Though the number of drug abusers is increasing rapidly in the State, no honest efforts are being put up by the Government to check the issue, he said adding that most of the drug lords are safeguarded by people in power.
Claiming that involvement of politicians and high ranking officials in trafficking drugs cannot be ruled out as there are records of seizing illicit drugs from powerful people on many occasions, Geetchandra lamented that as illicit drugs are widely available in the State, youth today find a saviour in these narcotic items to escape depression or anxiety caused by unemployment and other societal issues.
In short, youth are shown an easy escape for this mundane issue by feeding them drugs by these unethical drug lords, he added.
Claiming that transferring or suspending officials who seize drugs or give judgement against drug lords and vanishing samples are new normal these days, Geetchandra asked who will check drug-related problems that are mushrooming in the State if powerful persons interfered whenever huge consignment of narcotic items are seized in the State.
He then demanded the State Government pronounce capital punishment for drug lords to save Manipur.
